Thank you for choosing Cheeky Bots for your hand made nappy
If you've received an embroidered nappy, you may notice a plastic type substance on your nappy. This is water soluble and will disappear completely in the first wash.
Nappy Care Instructions
Preparing for first use
Wash nappies 3-5 times prior to first use to remove residues left behind from fabric manufacture. In the first wash, simply use half the recommended amount of detergent. In the second and third washes no detergent is required. Warm water is best for these initial washes. There is no need to dry in between these first 3-5 washes.
Your cloth nappies' absorbency will increase with each wash until they've had around 8 washes, at which time they will have reached maximum absorbency.
Washing
Nappy covers contain a waterproof fabric known as PUL. This has been treated with a coating to make it waterproof. It does have a small amount of breathability.
· Do not soak your PUL made items in bleach (e.g. nappisan, nappy soakers, whiteners)
· Do not tumble-dry for long periods, an occasional short tumble dry (15 – 20 mins on delicate) is acceptable
· Do not use vinegar in washes as it may affect the PUL.
Dry Paling
All types of Modern Cloth Nappies and Covers are subject to possible damage if soaked. You can put them straight in the washing machine (with any inserts separated) or into a dry bucket with a lid if you want to wait until you have a few and do them together. If it can be done easily, scrape any solids into the toilet first. Otherwise you can put the soiled nappy straight into the wash, the washing machine will take care of it all for you.
Washing
You can either wash cloth nappies on their own or in with other things. Just be sure there is nothing in the wash (i.e. bibs with Velcro) that will catch and damage the nappies (especially nappies with fold over elastic (FOE) on the outside, Velcro will destroy the FOE). Additionally, when washing your cloth nappies, if they have Velcro, ensure this is put into place. Any nappies with crystals or embellishments should be placed in a wash bag.
We do however recommend where possible dry paling your nappies and washing separately. Nappies should be left no longer than 2 days before washing. Once your nappy bucket is full, simply put the nappies into your washing machine and set your machine to do a rinse cycle. Once the rinse cycle is completed you can wash your nappies. We recommend washing on a warm cycle of around 50 degrees, though any temperature up to 60 degrees Celsius is fine. Remember to use only 1/4 to 1/2 the recommended detergent for the load size. Using too much detergent can lead to a build-up of product on your nappies which can affect the nappies absorbency and perhaps make them smelly. Never use fabric softener at any time as it will leave a residual coating on the fabric fibres.
Natural detergents are the best and try to avoid detergents with enzymes as these can react with baby’s skin.
Drying
Nappies and inserts can be tumble dried for short periods of time. Long periods of drying can shorten their life. In winter you may have to hang them inside on a clotheshorse to dry. When weather does permit, hanging your nappies on the clothesline in direct sunlight is best, as sunshine will remove smells and stains and also sanitise your nappies. Nappies should be hung on the line by the front and back sideways so as to not damage the elastic.
Strip Washing
If you notice your nappies are not as absorbent as they once were, are starting to leak and/or starting to smell you may need to do a strip wash to remove detergent build up. This may need to be done once a month, sometimes less, sometimes more. You will notice when they need doing.
To perform a strip wash you do the following:
Start with clean nappies and inserts. It is important they are washed with detergent first. Then do a hot wash with some bicarbonate soda (up to half a cup). Then run them through as many rinse cycles as is required for there to be no more soap suds. Then hang out to dry. Do not strip wash any more often than what is necessary as this can reduce the life of your nappies.
